Jon B. Alterman

A senior adviser to the Scowcroft Group, Jon B. Alterman provides strategic advice to clients on a range of global issues, with a focus on the Middle East. Dr. Alterman concurrently serves as the Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair in Global Security and Geostrategy and the Middle East Program Director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Dr. Alterman is a leading authority on the Middle East. An Arabic speaker, he has traveled in his professional capacity to every country in the region and maintains a wide range of contacts from Morocco to Iran. He has testified frequently on both sides of Capitol Hill, and he is regularly quoted in leading news outlets. Prior to joining CSIS more than 15 years ago, he worked in the Department of State as a member of the policy planning staff and as the special assistant to the assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs. Earlier in his career, Dr. Alterman was foreign policy and defense adviser to Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan (D-NY).

Dr. Alterman obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University, and his A.B. from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
