Franklin C. Miller Commentary At The Brookings Institution, “Trident Alternatives: What Next for British Nuclear Forces?”
On September 11, Danny Alexander, chief secretary to Her Majesty’s Treasury, and Brookings Visiting Fellow Ian Wallace hosted an Arms Control Initiative discussion on Britain’s nuclear future. Franklin C. Miller, Principal at The Scowcroft Group, analyzed the outlook for British deterrence in light of government austerity. For two decades, the UK has maintained the continuous at-sea deployment of at least one of its four Royal Navy Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines. This summer, Britain released a study examining alternatives to the Vanguard submarines that would retain the UK’s nuclear deterrence.
